עזה כבר לא ענייה כל כך

האומדנים בעניין קו העוני לא לקחו בחשבון את רמת המחירים הנמוכה ברצועת עזה – ולכן לאחר שינוי הפרמטרים צנח אחוז העניים מ-65% ל-33%. אבל יש עוד כאלו שסבורים שיש שם משבר

בצל הלהבות ותחת הכותרת “תקוות מרוסקות” פרסמו 21 ארגוני זכויות אדם דו”ח חדש על עזה. ישראל, מסתבר, שוב לא קיימה את הבטחותיה. חומרי בנייה חסרים ותוכניות השיפוץ של מבני הציבור ובתי הספר אינן יכולות להתקדם. עזה תחת מצור, טוען ג’רמי הובס, מנהל אוקספם אינטרנשיונל, ותושביה נמנעים מ”גישה למים נקיים, חשמל, פרנסה ועתיד”. עצוב. זוהי תמונת מצב עגומה שאינה מוסיפה כבוד למדיניות הישראלית השמה, כביכול, את ילדי עזה כאויביה. אלא שתשובה אפשרית לדו”ח הזה יכולה להגיע הפעם ממקום קצת פחות צפוי.ע

במקביל לכתיבת הדו”ח בנושא זכויות האדם, עסקה הלשכה המרכזית לסטטיסטיקה הפלסטינית בדו”ח העוסק בכלכלת עזה או לפחות בסוגיה הקשורה  לה לא במעט – בשיעור העוני. על פי המסמך, המוצג באנגלית שווה לכל נפש באתר האינטרנט הרשמי שלה – ב-2009 צנח האומדן לשיעור העוני בעזה במחצית, מ 65 ל-33 אחוזים.ט

Events surrounding the “Freedom Flotilla” tragedy continue to unfold, but the world is already flooded with demonstrations, denunciations and calls for retaliation. The Israeli attempt to board six civilian ships for security reasons resulted in 9 dead and over 30 injured.  It has been dubbed by most news outlets as “deadly,” “inhuman,” or a “disproportionate use of force” at best.

Condemnations have come from virtually all diplomatic circles.  United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon denounced the violence and demanded explanations. Russia’s Foreign Ministry dubbed it a “gross violation of international law.” Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak decried the use of excessive and unjustified force, and Turkey said its relations with Israel may not recover due to this “inhumane attack.” Continue reading →

Talk is not cheap

In the face of Palestinian incitement, Israel must return fire through spokesmen fluent in Arabic, and take initiatives to present alternatives.

Many in Israel were appalled when an animated video clip was posted last week depicting Noam Schalit, old and bitter, walking around with a photograph of his captive son Gilad, 20 years after his abduction. This cruel cynicism, the brainchild of the Izzadin Kassam Brigades, the Hamas military wing, succeeded in drawing attention. The movement’s Web sites professed that the clip was aimed at the Israeli public, which is expected to pressure the government to carry out a prisoner exchange. But a more thorough reading reveals that in actuality the target audience is mostly the Palestinians themselves, and the timing of the clip’s publication is not coincidental at all. Casi dos años despues que Hamas gano una gran mayoria en el nuevo parlamento palestino, y como consecuencia comento una nueva ronda de terror que provoco una operacion militar israeli en Gaza, un fragil cese del fuego ha puesto la ultima palabra de otro capitulo en este tragico conflicto.
